What Is PEG Feeding?

PEG (Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy) is a procedure where a feeding tube is inserted directly into the stomach through the abdominal wall. It's used for individuals who are unable to eat or swallow safely by mouth for extended periods.

Purpose of PEG Feeding Training

PEG feeding training ensures that anyone involved in the care of a person with a PEG tube:

  • Understands the anatomy and purpose of the tube
  • Can safely administer feeds, water, and medications
  • Is aware of how to prevent and respond to complications
  • Feels confident and competent in daily care routines

1. Understanding the PEG Tube

  • Anatomy of the digestive system in relation to the tube

2. Hygiene and Infection Prevention

  • Hand hygiene protocols
  • Cleaning the site and equipment
  • Preventing cross-contamination

3. Administering Feeds and Medications

  • Using a feeding pump or gravity method
  • Checking for tube placement (per local protocol)
  • Flushing the tube before and after feeds/medications

4. Troubleshooting and Complications

  • Blockages, leakage, redness, or signs of infection
  • When and how to escalate concerns
  • Emergency protocols

5. Maintenance and Monitoring

  • Daily care of the site
  • Monitoring nutritional intake and fluid balance
  • Documentation and reporting
